Happy Belated (or Very Early!) Autism Acceptance Month!
“Acceptance” of autism is not compatible with the medical model of disability that sees autistic people as “less than”, and autism as inherently disabling. A social model of disability recognizes that while autistic people may experience the world, think, communicate, and emote in ways that are not typical, those are differences, not deficits.

“Acceptance” of autism is not compatible with the medical model of disability that sees autistic people as “less than”, and autism as inherently disabling. A social model of disability recognizes that while autistic people may experience the world, think, communicate, and emote in ways that are not typical, those are differences, not deficits. What disables autistic people is navigating a society and institutions with standards and norms created by and for allistic (not autistic) people, who, largely did not consider that autistic people exist, consider that autistic people exist only when autistic people present in ways that match stereotypical representations, or consider autistic people so abnormal that they need not be considered.
If you’re autistic and want to connect with other autistic folks, this is for you. If you’re allistic and want to learn more, this is for you, too!
Attendance at this professional development activity is limited to LRCCD employees and invited participants.
