Worried that your writing assessment expectations are far from the norm among your colleagues? Neither are we! Join us anyway for a fun, low-stakes norming session as we compare how we evaluate first-year student writing.

This session will focus on exploring expectations for what counts as "good" first-year student writing. Participants should bring a rubric they use to assess student writing and apply it to score five sample essays responding to the same prompt. Once everyone has entered their scores into a shared Google Spreadsheet, the presenters will use AI to conduct a statistical analysis of the results.

The session will conclude with an open discussion of the scoring process and findings, focusing on what they reveal about our expectations for student writing and how we can better support first-year writers at ARC.

Attendance at this professional development activity is limited to LRCCD employees and invited participants.

Facilitated by: Matt Kronzer and Janay Lovering, English
