How are students placed into a HomeBase at ARC?
After a Major of Study is chosen, a student is associated with a HomeBase. ARC IT is currently working to update the system to add information for Transfer to 4 year and Undecided students to a HomeBase.
Have the ground spaces been identified at ARC for the six HomeBases?
There are six spaces in renovation. The STEM center is moving along with renovations and all spaces will be ready by spring 2022 semester in January 2022.
Will counselors or staff find students that "disappear" from ARC's system?
ARC is currently working to locate students who are dropping out of courses. Guided Pathway is statewide. ARC has formed a team to see if more staffing is needed to address student needs. Starfish Implementation Team helps to look at student attendance. If a faculty member sends a referral to a HomeBases coach notifying of student absences, then this helps ARC to detect students who may have dropped out of ARC's system.
What about Undecided, Dual Enrollment, and Transfer to 4 Year students finding a HomeBase?
- ARC is looking into best options to provide student support and working on connecting Undecided students to HomeBases. Currently, ARC is addressing Undecided Students by placing students in the Career Center to help students pick a Major of Study.
- ARC is working with Transfer to 4 Year students to place students on a transfer path in a HomeBase.
- Dual Enrollment at ARC is growing. ARC is working to connect with Dual Enrollment students with a major. Many Dual Enrollment students come to ARC. ARC is working to get Dual Enrollment students connected sooner, which helps in the long run.
Will ARC work on development of 3-unit interdisciplinary courses?
ARC is currently researching the thematic approach taught by a range of faculty across all disciplines. Thematic means different Areas of Interest (Nursing, STEM, and so on). The goal is to get at least 25 or more faculty consistent with HomeBases to participate in teaching courses.
What department would host the 3-unit interdisciplinary courses?
ARC would create a stand-alone department to host the courses. ARC would utilize course designator in Socrates to place students in courses.
Can classified staff with minimal qualifications teach the interdisciplinary courses?
Yes, classified staff with minimal qualifications can teach the interdisciplinary courses\.
Will internships for students in HomeBases be available?
Yes, internships will be available for students in HomeBases.
Will the 3-unit course affect other first-year courses?
No, nothing will change with Puente, HCD, or other courses.
Is the 3-unit course mandatory?
Ultimately, the course is optional. It could depend on the unit size (.5 to 3 units). It may interfere with other courses for first-year students. Changing the unit size helps with caseload and student interest.
What type of "welcome packet" do students in HomeBases receive?
First-year declared majors receive a welcome packet from HomeBases that consists of Introduction to HomeBases Staff, campus locations, and necessary ARC resources.
Can ARC hold a summer HomeBases fair?
ARC will ask President Dixon about next steps to creating a workshop focused on Career Options and getting to know ARC staff and faculty.
Can HomeBase courses be offered hybrid or online?
Yes, HomeBase courses can be hybrid or online.
