In this part one of two workshops, participants will receive historical background information and data of the different Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) groups at American River College. Topics discussed will include historical exclusion, marginalization, and institutional barriers of AANHPI communities. Cultural backgrounds and practices will be explored as well as the various terminologies used to define or describe AANHPI communities of learners at large. In addition, participants will gain understanding of the multiple ethnicities represented under the AANHPI group, and the successes and challenges they experienced based on the American River College API Disproportionately Impacted Report.

Equitable and Inclusive Classroom Practices
This second workshop will provide hands-on practical applications for supporting AANHPI DI students at American River College by applying the equity framework presented by Gholdy Muhammad’s Cultivating Genius. Participants will learn methods on how to create safe environments for AANHPI DI students to explore their identities and skills and foster intellectual development. Furthermore, culturally relevant and inclusive classroom practices that encompass a sense of belonging and cultivate supportive communication strategies for in-person and online classes will be explored. In addition to supporting students as individuals and developing their skills, ARC academic resources to support AANHPI learners will also be discussed. It is recommended that participants complete the Historical Background and Research (Workshop 1) before taking this workshop.
