Sports coaches are expert educators. This expertise is not always given the credit it deserves in higher education, especially in professional development that tends to center the experiences/perspectives of traditional classroom faculty. This panel presentation seeks to highlight the teaching practices, strategies, experiences, and philosophies of ARC’s athletics coaches. How do coaches build trust with their student-athletes? How do they create “culture” in a team/sports program/class? How do coaches balance building on existing student-athlete strengths with developing new techniques/skills? The panel will include a discussant, Dr. Jeffrey Duncan-Andrade (CSU San Francisco Latina/o Studies; Race and Resistance Studies), whose past research focuses on the overlap between sports coaches and critical pedagogical approaches to education.
