Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it potentially dangerous or harmful to human health or the environment. The universe of hazardous wastes is large and diverse. Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, or contained gases. They can be the by-products of manufacturing processes, discarded used materials, or discarded unused commercial products, such as cleaning fluids (solvents) or pesticides.

Defining Hazardous Waste

The four characteristics of hazardous waste are Ignitability, Reactivity, Corrosivity, and Toxicity.

Hazardous waste must be managed in accordance with State and Federal laws and must be disposed of through a designated hazardous waste hauler.

Hazardous waste generators on campus must ensure the safe and proper handling, ordering, storing, labeling, accumulation, packaging, and disposal.

  • Hazardous waste must be picked up within 180 days of the first drop accumulated as waste.
  • Employees must be trained with proper hazardous waste handling and emergency procedures relevant to their responsibilities.

To schedule a hazardous waste pick-up, or to request replacement hazardous waste containers, please contact Campus Operations at (916) 484-8300 and submit a Work Order.

Universal Waste

Universal wastes are hazardous wastes that were determined to pose a lower immediate risk to people and the environment compared to other hazardous wastes. These universal wastes are widely produced by households and many different types of businesses. California’s hazardous waste regulations identify eight categories of hazardous waste as “universal wastes”:

Metal Waste

ARC's Automotive Department houses a metal roll off bin to collect all scrap and waste metal. If your department has metal items that need to be discarded please coordinate with the Automotive Department to recycle it. Metal recycling not only diverts valuable material from landfill, but helps fund programs on campus.
